Sensory Playground. Or Summer.

What is it about the heightened senses of summer that make small moments feel profound? As summer progresses from July to August, there is a mounting momentum that I suddenly realize has been swelling since the first blooms in April. The robust branch of every overhanging tree. The sonorous chorus of cicadas echoing into a summer night that so defines the very reason to sleep with the window open. The way the heat from the afternoon blankets the earth into evening and that one little life saving cool breeze that breaths life into the sheer curtains that frame the open window. The feeling of skin because there are more summer dresses and shorts and tangled bare calves as we fall asleep. Ice cream becomes as essential as water, usually consumed just after the setting of a hot sun. Remember walking down Oakton, the four of us, for ice cream that one summer night? Or the three of us sitting on a park bench at Gilson Park reading Kundera after work? Exactly.

The ascendancy of summer is a sensory playground and I am learning to love the tension that it creates. The building crescendo is similar to one of those sneaky thriller movies where you notice three quarters into viewing that you are white knuckled and your chest is pounding but you are uncertain how and when that happened? Cue floor drums. Or the soundtrack to House of Cards. Such small moments become epic memories with the backdrop of summer. And so we are finishing up with beach volleyball on a Monday night at sunset. Our ankles are dotted with pecks from the mouths of little gnats and I am wearing shorts for the first time this year and a sleeping babe who is tucked against my chest. In the darkening night, Ben and I pick up some frosty's at the Wendy's drive through. On our way home, we debate if there indeed is anything natural about a frosty. And this is our moment- a few minutes in the car on a beautiful night with beach-y-ness in our hair and on our skin- that we have a simple perfect moment together.

Monday Blessings

It is most difficult to leave her when she is awake. I stammer goodbye at least three times while she is hoisted up over Grandma's shoulder, her evolving blue eyes blinking at me with fresh grown lashes.  She doesn't know that I am leaving for work nor does she cognitively comprehend my attempts at reassurance that I love her dearly. According to the developmental books, she only has a 10 second memory at this stage. It's possible that I am forgotten once I am gone and she has batted her lashes another eight times. Unlike me who day dreams of our reunion.

Maybe it is too soon to miss my previous life- the one where I luxuriously scheduled a hair cut with minimal time restrictions. 3:30 on a Wednesday? I'll be there! It is true that my super fun solo outings now involve the fruit market where I bask in taking a few moments to marvel at the varieties of berries.  These are good times. Recently I was driving down Wilson Avenue and I had a strong desire to round up Ben, Pat, Kelly, and Emily and head to Bangers and Lace. The way the wind shield was dotted with a misty rain and the early darkness of a November evening made me nostalgic for friends, a corn dog, soft pretzel dipped in chocolate stout mustard, and an Allagash White beer in Wicker Park. That and I missed Emily's birthday outing this year which was sad. But mostly I love just being with my husband and daughter. Other than the two scenarios described above, I cannot think of another moment where I wanted it to just be just me and Ben. Or just me. I'm sure this will change when the little one starts walking and has unreasonable demands but for now I cannot think of many other places I would rather be than cuddled on the couch, watching an episode of What Not to Wear or reading Click Clack Moo.

(Now the always-in-need-of-re-stocking do-I-have-enough-wipes? diaper bag... THAT is something I would be okay never having to tote again.)

A little Family Life

My favorite mama-daughter photo from
Miss D and my photo shoot with my friend Lydia

First social excursion on my own again with my bible study (5 years!)
Renee's birthday at Longman and Eagle

Miss D is closing in on her second month (meu!) and I am trying to avoid the strong temptation to catch her every face and her every sound with an iphone. Rather I am trying to sit and observe and interact. I do, however, still take a lot of pictures. This week she has started to smile at my voice and stare me, Ben, or the dangling jingling toys down with an intensiy that almost frightens me. I did not think I would find such profound joy in almost every moment we are together. With that said, I did go out to a whiskey bar Sunday afternoon for Renee's birthday while Miss D hung out with Ben and Pat to record the brass ensemble in the music studio. This week was filled with crafting and Vietnamese sandwiches with Cathy and Avery, bonfires and brats with the worship team, bookclub to discuss the fantastic read The Night Circus, a visit with JaJa and Gmo, return to Melissa and my 2+ mile walks around the city- now with little bundled babies, and a lot of episodes of Parks and Rec whilst cuddling with my little skinny love. What could be finer?

Fourth of July: the best holiday of the year

Rachel- my loverly sister-in-law- filled this red container up with
rosemary infused margaritas. Of course it's all about
presentation too... don't forget the table cloth!

Mr. Teo on the paddle board. So skilled. So tan. So balanced!
Still smiling.

Drinks on our blanket.

Miss Maye after our kayaking expedition.
She got the free ride between her mama and Daniella.

One of the hottest fourth of July's we've had in a while but we celebrated with absolute deliciousness and plenty of Lake Michigan water. This was the first time I ever found Lake Michigan not cold enough! My sister in law reserved some paddle boards and kayaks as well as prepared a yummy spread of herb and garlic infused burgers, herbed potato salad, and corn/ avocado salad followed by flour less chocolate cake. Despite the 100+ degree temperatures I could live this day over and over. We settled under a tree and when we became hot, we darted into the water for a few minutes dodging flying volleyballs and children in life vests.

After dinner we headed over to the fireworks at the boat yard (where a variety of people from our church and Ben's parents are usually camped out right on the shore), Teo (10), Daniella (13), and I weaved through the enormous crowds of families and fiestas (literally).

Daniella to Teo: "I spend a lot of time at camp with little kids. I mean, you are a little kid but you are a cool little kid, you know? You're not a little little kid."

Teo: "Yeah. And you are an older kid but you aren't a crazy older kid. You are cool too."

Can we please have more of these conversations in adulthood please?
